The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (RTH) is the only Hummingbird regularly seen on the east coast, and the only Hummingbird that breeds in our area. These little birds have iridescent green feathers on their wings, tail, and back, with light under-bellies, and mature males will have bright red throats. Often seen and heard buzzing around gardens in the spring and summer, RTHs move quickly from nectar source to nectar source, taking quick breaks in smaller trees and bushes. In addition to nectar, they will also eat small insects. These birds are generally attracted to reds and oranges but will feed from any color plant or feeder that's available. When it comes to your feeders, there is no need to add red coloring to the nectar, simply pick out a feeder with colored flowers or a colored container! If you do put out a feeder, not only will you get to observe the birds while they eat, but you'll definitely get to see some dramas play out as RTHs are extremely territorial and will often chase each other around while protecting food sources. These are migrating birds who start flying south in early to mid-fall and return to our area in April and May.
