As the name suggests, the English Springer Spaniel was officially founded in England as a hunting dog, although there is evidence the breed was in existence prior to its official founding. Springers have the typical “spaniel” look, with curly feathering in specific areas of their bodies and big downward facing ears.
Springers come in a variety of colors and often have a variety of white patterning throughout. The most common colors seen are liver and white, and black and white. These dogs are medium to large dogs, ranging anywhere from 40 to 55 lbs on average.
Springer Spaniels are very energetic and happy dogs that thrive in an environment that allows them lots of human time and exercise. They were bred to work closely with hunters in the field, which means they enjoy training and staying close to people. Due to the dense and curly nature of their coats, regular grooming is a requirement, and often includes a combination of brushing and clipping depending on the dog’s genetics.
